This Will Happen To You On Your Fitness Journey

The plan was simple.

Tuesday morning: Hitch the truck to the Airstream in Corpus Christi and head north to Austin for an important appointment the following day.

It’s only a 200-mile drive, which makes for a pretty easy 4.5-hour drive day.

Did I mention that the reason we were in Corpus was for an extensive (and expensive) truck repair?

We worked in the morning and headed out around 10:00 AM.

All was well—until it wasn’t.

We pulled over after a couple of hours to grab some lunch.

As soon as I put the truck in park, I knew we were in trouble.

There was a loud, quite unsettling “knocking” sound coming from the engine.

I left it running, popped the hood, and pulled the dipstick.

Smoke.

I opened the oil filler cap.

More smoke.

I shut it down, said a prayer, and sent a video of the situation to the mechanic.

“Don’t restart that truck.”

How are we going to get our house (the Airstream) to Austin without a truck?

How are we going to get the truck back to the mechanic?

What about us, the dogs, and the stuff in the bed of the truck we need?

Oh yeah— that important appointment the next morning?

By the grace of God, we kept our cool, and a new plan started falling into place.

The mechanic sent a driver to get us, the dogs, and to tow the Airstream the rest of the way north.

Within a couple of hours, we got our truck unhitched, out of the way, and hooked our rig up to his (even older) Ford truck.

Before we were ready to roll, the tow truck showed up and had our Super Duty loaded within minutes. Back to the shop it went.

By 7:30 PM, we pulled into the RV park, unhitched, gave “John Paul the Driver” a well-deserved tip, set up camp, ate dinner, and hit the sack.

How would we get to our appointment the next day without a car?

Once again, God provided a way.

Why am I telling you this story?

What in the world could it have to do with health and fitness?

You have plans, goals, and intentions.

You plan to eat well.

You plan to work out.

You plan to change your habits.

Your journey starts out well. Smooth roads. Low friction.

Until it doesn’t.

Problems show up.

You eat junk you said you wouldn’t.

You miss a workout for no reason other than you just weren’t feeling it that day.

It’s your “breakdown moment,” when you realize your original plan is out the window. It happens to all of us.

But understand this…

The shape you’re in today is a result of how you’ve handled these moments in the past.

What have you done?

Have you gotten upset, beaten yourself up, and let a bump in the road turn into a stopping point that keeps you from reaching your goals?

Or have you taken a deep breath, composed yourself, and adapted a new plan that keeps you moving forward?

Please know this: the road to your fitness goals is not a straight one.

We—and all of our clients—have followed a road full of twists, turns, and bumps on the way to becoming the healthy versions of ourselves we are today.

And it’s only possible if you’re willing to adapt instead of give up along the way.

If you need help, this is what we do.
