Take the Fitness Talent Test

Three men were each given a huge sum of money with simple instructions from the giver:

“Take care of this, invest it wisely, and return it with a profit.”

The first was given the equivalent of 100 years‘ salary. He put it to work, doubled it, and was rewarded greatly.

The second man was given half as much, but treated it with the same seriousness. He also doubled his money and was rewarded with even more.

The third man was entrusted with less, about 20 years‘ salary. Afraid of losing the money, he buried it in the ground.

When it was time to settle up, he returned the same money he’d been given.

The giver was not impressed. He took the money and gave it to the one who had proven faithful, knowing it would be used wisely. The excuse-making man was cast out and never trusted again.

If this story sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the Parable of the Talents from Matthew 25.

Here’s how it applies to your health and fitness.

You too have been given a certain amount of “talents.” In this case, your talents are your resources. The time, energy, and opportunities you have to invest in your health.

Maybe you have a lot. Hours each week to work out, plenty of money for food, and the latest gadgets for recovery.

Maybe you have less. Thirty minutes to train three days a week. A grocery budget that requires discipline. Limited space for equipment or time for meal prep.

Or, maybe right now your only “talent” is working on your mindset so you don’t fall back into the habits that keep you stuck.

No matter how much or how little you have, you have been given a gift and a responsibility to use it wisely.

For years, I wasted mine. I blamed my genetics, my lack of motivation, and my seemingly non-existent willpower for why I was overweight, tired, and weak.

I was “busy”, figuring I’d figure things out when it seemed a bit easier.

Remember though… In the parable, the one who started with less was rewarded just as much. The only one who lost everything was the one who buried his chance and made excuses.

So, what will you do?

Accept the talents you have as enough and invest them for a return? Or bury them in the ground and end up with nothing?

In an age where personal responsibility is a dirty word, I’ll shoot you straight and remind you that no one can do it for you, and no one is coming to save you.
