Should You Write Your Own Workouts?

Friday night, 8 p.m.

Blakley and I are at the hottest nightclub in town.

Scratch that.

I’m in the house, wielding a crowbar and a hammer while Blakley makes spaghetti in the Airstream.

I’ve finished removing all of the baseboard and door trim throughout the house, and I’m moving on to the hall bathroom demo.

The sink and countertop come off without incident.

Having spent all day coaching and programming for my clients, I’m pretty wiped.

I’m also famished and should probably call it a day, but I move on to the tub.

It’s one of those one-piece fiberglass tub surrounds with integrated walls.

“I’ll just remove the metal trim around the hot and cold valves so I can easily demo the walls tomorrow.”

The handles come off easily with a simple Allen wrench.

The tub filler is next. Lefty loosey, and it’s history.

The cold water trim is next.

“I guess you just unscrew it?”

Big mistake.

Within seconds, an unhinged blast of water launches the loosened valve across the room.

I’m soaked. My GoPro is soaked (yes, there is video of this). And the water is still shooting everywhere.

After a scream — I’ll have to check the recording to see what choice words I actually said — I grab a wrench and run outside, nearly slipping in the rising water in the bathroom.

Heart pounding, I get the water turned off at the main valve by the light of my iPhone.

I poke my head inside the RV.

“I’m going to need some help.”

I reassemble the cold water valve the best I can and leave Blakley in the bathroom to monitor the situation while I turn the water back on.

3, 2, 1…

Still leaking.

Another try.

Still leaking.

“I guess we’re not turning the water back on tonight.”

How does the story end?

I’m not sure.

I’m writing this on Saturday morning, and the problem has yet to be solved.

Here’s what I do know:

#1 — No one makes good decisions or does exceptional work when they’re hungry.

We’ve all proven this to be true. Some lessons just have to be learned multiple times, right?

#2 — Experts exist for a reason.

I’m a professional coach. And although I’m “Google Certified” in many things, plumbers and electricians exist for a reason.

Don’t try to make your own workout program. Don’t use YouTube to decide whether your deadlift form is safe.

Hire a pro. #shamelessplug

So that’s where things stand.

No water.

One humbled homeowner.

A tub valve currently sitting on the floor like a trophy.

This morning, after sleep, food, and coffee, the situation feels far less dramatic.

Amazing what basic recovery can do.

For now, we’re living that rustic, water-optional lifestyle.

Have a great Monday.

Jonathan
