What You Want
We were listening to a podcast on the drive to New Mexico this morning.
The subject was health and longevity.
It got me thinking…
You don’t want to wait in line at the pharmacy every week.
You’d rather spend that time doing things you love.
You don’t want to feel tired and need a nap in the middle of the day.
You’d rather power through, energized, and look forward to bedtime—excited to do it all again tomorrow.
You don’t want to live to a hundred just for the sake of being old.
You want to live the width of a long life—feeling strong, independent, and sharp well past your so-called prime.
But when you look around at your coworkers, old friends on Facebook, and even your own peers...
It seems like what you want isn’t exactly the norm.
Normal looks like being too tired to work out.
Normal means being too anxious and stressed to sleep.
Normal is being too busy to eat real, nourishing food.
Normal is being sick, overweight, and slowly sliding toward weakness, medication, and dependence.
But you? You want the opposite.
Which means you’re going to stand out.
People will notice.
They’ll say you’re lucky, or that it must be easy for you.
Some will secretly wish they weren’t “normal” either.
Others will try to make you feel like being different is wrong, selfish, or not worth the effort.
Let them talk.
Keep being different.
Keep setting the example.
Keep doing the abnormal things that make you feel your best.
Because life isn’t meant to be lived tired, in pain, or waiting for someone else to take care of you.
Get comfortable being weird.
Because weird?
Weird can be pretty great.
